Notes from : 5th Sunday 3rd hour July 29th, 2018 Combined Lesson

***Disclaimer: The following are notes taken from the combined 3rd hour last Sunday. I know I got a lot wrong so please feel free to add additional insights, corrections, and clarifications in the comment section. Please do not rely on the accuracy of the notes and quotes, they're only meant to jog our memories and encourage us to follow up with feelings we had during the class.

Bishop's Remarks:

We covenant to be the Lord’s friend.
"Faith without works is dead"

“You’ll find the answer to your prayers when you’re doing the Lord’s work.” -Joseph Smith

When we are on the Lord’s errands we qualify for the answers/blessings.

D&C 130: 20 There is a law, irrevocably decreed in heaven before the foundations of this world, upon which all blessings are predicated—21 And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated.

If you need a blessing, find out what law it's tied to and do your part to qualify for that blessing.

“And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and Man.” - Luke 2:52
We need to make a conscious effort to work on our spirituality. Set goals.

Sister Walker's Remarks: Prayer and Covenants

Nothing opens the blessings of heaven more than when we keep our covenants...When we keep our covenants we gain access to His power.
When times are tough, let your covenants be paramount.

Our covenants can be a delight to us.

Prayers: What do prayers have to do with covenants?

D&C 121:45 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.

Be specific in your prayers.

Prayer will help unlock the promises the Lord is willing to grant.

Are we willing to wrestle in prayer?

As we keep our covenants we will have the confidence to go before the Lord and ask for a solution or a blessing.

Shared a powerful story about her daughter who was sick on her mission. Sister Walker felt that the only one who could help her was the Savior. Sister Walker prayed specifically that her daughter would be healed the next morning. She later received a letter from her daughter saying that when she woke up the the next morning, to her astonishment, she was was completely healed.

Brother Larsen: Let the Scriptures be your Liahona

Bednar: Revelation is the doctrinal reason for studying the scriptiures. Scripture study is for receiving personal revelation.

Elder Oaks and Elder Bednar had compared the scriptures to the Liahona.

Use the scriptures to help you get answers to your prayers.

Bro. Of Jared story...brings rocks and asks the Lord to touch them.  He brought Rocks to the Lord! When you need help in your life...do you come up with a plan and take it to the Lord pleading with faith that he will honor and help fufill your plan?

***Eric then put me on the spot and asked me to recap the story of the conversion of Alma the younger. After butchering the story, I was flustered and didn't take notes after that so sorry Eric... it's up to you to finish out the rest of  these notes.

Eric shared a personal story about praying specifically on behalf of a family member who was in need of help Eric asked that the Lord would send either his wife's Father or his own Father to assist this family member.

Brother Edwards: Spiritual Work

We have received several invitations recently from the Prophet as well as from our stake presidency:

  1. Do a personal inventory. Where are you in your life? Where are you on the covenant path.
  2. I urge you to stretch beyond your current ability to receive personal revelation. (That you might know the mysteries that bring you joy) I plead with you to do the spiritual work to enhance your ability to receive personal revelation. Go back to Nelsons talk and see his invitations.
  3. The Stake has asked us to …attend the temple, make the temple our highest priority, do family history work, keep your temple covenants….If we do, we will deepen our personal conversion, become better parents, keep his commandments, forgive, share the gospel, prosper the lords way, be filled with the saviors love. ...how does serving in the temple help us receive these blessings?
Our spiritual work is that we are working on our relationship with our Heavenly Father. We are cultivating a relationship with a parent who loves us. Who wants to bless us.

Embue spiritual work with joy. Look for what we can do better and seek the revelation in your life.

***That's all I got and I know I missed so many wonderful parts and insights. Please add comments and share what you got out of the combined lesson.
